I have a holiday home in the south of Spain and have already visited the Spaghetti Western movie locations in the South of Spain in the Tabernas desert. Earlier this year there was a Netflix documentary released which told of the renovation of Sad Hill Cemetary, the location of the final gunfight in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. As I was due to drive home to the UK from the Murcia region to Bilboa to get the ferry I made a point of scheduling a stop to see the movie location.
Despite searching online and visiting a number of websites I could not find any proper driving directions to actually find the site. Lots of websites talk about it but do not actually tell you how to find it. This is where the idea for this page came up. official site had no directions, trip adviser has some basic reviews, so I decided to find out for myself.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
First, the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was filmed in 1966 in two locations. In the South of Spain in the Tabernas desert near Almeria where lots of Spaghetti Westerns were filmed. I am going to do a seperate page about those movie locations, and in North of Spain near Burgos. The parts of the movie that were filmed in the North include Betterville (the prison camp), the hospital, the bridge scene and the final shootout location at Sad Hill Cemetary.
Directions from South.
If coming from the south of Spain you can access Sad Hill Cemetery from the town Santo Domingo de Silos. There is a car park at the top of the town. On the left, if facing the town below, you can see a track on that leads up a hill. At the top of the hill there is a dirt road on your left and an old farm track that leads up through the hills. If you follow the track on the right there is a 2.5 mile hike up into the mountain that will bring you out on top of sad hill cemetary for some great views and photos of the whole Sad Hill Cementary valley. You can then carry on following the trail down to the main graveyard.
You will probably miss this great view if you do the driving route from the North. This hiking route may not be suitable for some people so if you do not want to hike follow the North directions below. Also if you are going to hike, have a mobile phone fully charged as you will need google maps to navigate the various trails through the mountain. And wear suitable clothing, shoes and have water with you.
Directions from the North.
This will work for people coming from the South also. First get on the N-234 south of Burgos and head to a town called Barbadillo del Mercado, once there you will see a sign towards, Contreras, about 7km away. Follow the road and when you get near you will see the signs for “Sad Hill”. Follow those however there is a point where the signs stop and you are faced with two dirt tracks. Take the track on the right. The road is unpaved but well compacted, I was driving an Audi, it is ok, but drive slowly as there is the odd pothole. At the end of the dirt track you will find Sad Hill Cementary. It is free to enter. Once there you can follow in the footsteps of Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. See the graves, the stone circle and walk the valley towards what was Betterville.
Directions to Sad Hill Cemetery
It is great to look at the images of the three gun fighters in the original movie and the backdrop behind them. You will then notice the mountains behind each of them. Then you can work out where each one stood in the circle. Try to recreate the iconic scene for yourself.
